Learning about Television Hearing Aids
We have all heard about the benefits of hearing aids, and most of us have a pretty good idea about what they look like and how they work. However, not many people are aware of television hearing aids and what these devices are generally used for.
About Television Hearing Aids
Regular hearing aids are not always the best choice when watching television for a variety of reasons. First, since you usually sit quite a distance away from the television set, you may find that much of the time you cannot hear your programs as loudly or clearly as you would like to. This is where television hearing aids come into play, because they are hearing aids which are specifically designed to work while you are watching television.
Television hearing aids essentially work on the same principle as large area listening systems, but on a smaller scale. The sound is picked up at the source and then transmitted via radio, light, or electromagnetic waves right to your ear. In the usual model of television hearing aids, you either locate the microphone by the TV loudspeaker or plug a wire into the ‘audio-output’ jack in the back of the television set. Then these wires connect to a small IR or FM transmitter, which broadcasts a radio or light signal to the same type of special receivers that are used with large-area systems.
When you use your television hearing aid, you are immediately able to hear the television better and more clearly. Not only will you to be able to properly hear the TV set, but you will be able to keep the set itself at a decent listening level. That way, if you have visitors or other family members watching the program with you, they do not have to hear the television set cranked up.
Whether you have a hearing aid already or not, if you ever have the television on and notice that you cannot hear it as clearly or properly as you should, then you should know that there is this option of the television hearing aid. For more information about these devices, you can ask your audiologist about them the next time you see him.
There are many different options that you can choose from when it comes to a television hearing aid. However, you will want to make sure that you get your audiologist’s opinion first about the best device for you. He will be able to advise you on the best selection for you based on your degree and type of hearing loss.
